Πόση είναι πραγματικά η συμμετοχή των γυναικών στις ένοπλες δυνάμεις;
Οι γυναίκες υπηρετούν στο στρατό σε διαφορετικούς ρόλους. Ωστόσο, η αυξημένη αποδοχή των γυναικών σε μη διοικητικούς, πολεμικούς και ηγετικούς ρόλους κατά τη διάρκεια του περασμένου αιώνα έχει αναθεωρήσει το ρόλο των γυναικών στις ένοπλες δυνάμεις, ενώ δεν έχει επιτευχθεί ακόμη ισότιμη εκπροσώπηση.
Όπως δείχνουν τα στοιχεία του ΝΑΤΟ, το μερίδιο γυναικείου ενεργού προσωπικού στο στρατό των κρατών-μελών της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης κυμαίνεται από 20% έως 0,3% στις 27 χώρες που παρέχουν στοιχεία. Μια άλλη χώρα της οποίας η στρατολόγηση γυναικών νεοσύλλεκτων εξακολουθεί να είναι ελάχιστη είναι η Ινδία, όπως δείχνουν τα στοιχεία του ινδικού υπουργείου Άμυνας.
Χώρες που έχουν υποχρεωτική στρατιωτική θητεία για τις γυναίκες όπως το Ισραήλ, το Μαρόκο και η Βόρεια Κορέα έχουν φυσικά υψηλή γυναικεία συμμετοχή στις ένοπλες δυνάμεις. Το ίδιο ισχύει για ορισμένα συστήματα επιλεκτικών υπηρεσιών – όπου οι νέοι καλούνται να αφιερώσουν χρόνο στο στρατό ή σε κοινωνικούς σκοπούς – για παράδειγμα στη Σουηδία ή τη Νορβηγία.
