Γιάννης Στουρνάρας

Γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα στις 10 Δεκεμβρίου 1956. Αποφοίτησε από το Τμήμα Οικονομικών Επιστημών του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών το 1978. Απέκτησε Μεταπτυχιακό και Διδακτορικό τίτλο (MPhil 1980, DPhil 1982) από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Οξφόρδης, στο οποίο και εργάστηκε από το 1981 έως το 1985 ως Research Fellow και Lecturer στο Κολλέγιο St. Catherine΄s και ως ερευνητής
στο Ινστιτούτο Ενεργειακών Σπουδών.

Είναι Ομότιμος Καθηγητής Οικονομικών στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών. Διετέλεσε Πρόεδρος του Συμβουλίου Οικονομικών Εμπειρογνωμόνων του Υπουργείου Οικονομίας και Οικονομικών από το 1994 έως τον Ιούλιο του 2000. Από το 2000 μέχρι το 2004 ήταν Πρόεδρος και Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος της Εμπορικής Τράπεζας. Διετέλεσε Γενικός Διευθυντής στο Ίδρυμα Οικονομικών & Βιομηχανικών Ερευνών (ΙΟΒΕ) (Σεπτέμβριος 2009 – Ιούνιος 2012). Από τον Ιούλιο του 2012 έως τον Ιούνιο του 2014 ήταν Υπουργός Οικονομικών.

Από τον Ιούνιο του 2014 είναι Διοικητής της Τράπεζας της Ελλάδος και μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της Ευρωπαϊκής Κεντρικής Τράπεζας. Από τον Φεβρουάριο του 2020 έως τον Δεκέμβριο του 2024 ήταν Πρόεδρος της Audit Committee της Ευρωπαϊκής Κεντρικής Τράπεζας.

Yannis Stournaras Governor, Bank of Greece

Born in Athens, December 10, 1956. He graduated from the Department of Economics, University of Athens (1978). He obtained his post-graduate degrees (MPhil 1980, DPhil 1982) from Oxford University, where he also worked from 1981 to 1985 as a Research Fellow and Lecturer at St. Catherine’s College and as Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies.

He was Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics, University of Athens (joined 1989). From 1994 to July 2000 he was Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors at the Ministry of Economy and Finance. From 2000 to 2004 he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Emporiki Bank. He served as Director General of the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE) (September 2009-June 2012). In May 2012 he joined the then Interim Government as Minister of Development, Competitiveness and Shipping. After the national elections in June 2012, he became Minister of Finance, until June 2014.

Since June 27th 2014, he is Governor of the Bank of Greece and Member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank. From February 2020 to December 2024, he was Chairman of the Audit Committee of the European Central Bank.
