Michael G. Arghyrou is the Chief Economic Advisor of the Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic. As from July 2023 he is a full member of the Board of Directors of the European Investment Bank. Between July 2019 and August 2025, he was the Head of the Council of Economic Advisors of the Minister of Finance of the Hellenic Republic. In this capacity, he represented Greece at the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC), the Eurogroup Working Group (EWG) and the Board of Directors of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM). He is also one of the five members of the Steering Committee which designed the Greek National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Greece 2.0.

He is a graduate of the Department of Economics of the Athens University of Economics and Business and holds a Master’s and a PhD in Economics from the University of London (Queen Mary College). Since July 2019 he is a Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics of the University of Piraeus (currently on leave of absence for civil service). He was a Lecturer, Assistant and Associate Professor of Economics at Cardiff University (2005-2019) and a Lecturer in Economics at Brunel University (1998-2005).

Michael was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1972. He is married with Kiriaki Mitrousi with whom they have a daughter, Sofia.
