Around 4:53 pm on that day, an earthquake with its epicenter off the coast of Sanriku occurred. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was estimated to be about 10 km deep, and the earthquake's magnitude was 7.4 on the Richter scale. The quake registered a seismic intensity of 5+ in Sanpachikamikita, Aomori Prefecture, and 5- in the northern coast, Iwate Prefecture.
